Project: Backyard

Construction has begun!  The backyard is on it’s way to ultimate beauty.  Lucky me.

First downside-  Concrete company has two men working.  Both lit-up smokes five minutes after arriving.  I’m biting my tongue.  By no stretch of the imagination is this my strong suit.

I know the lecture will come.  My delivery must be delicate but not too tender as they are construction guys- thick skinned.

Oh I bet if you tell them your situation they will refrain from lighting up in your vicinity!

I would have to say something too, I give dirty looks now or growl in their direction. If they are working for you, they should respect your wishes.

  3. Kelly Roche' says:

Absolutely, you should say something! If it’s happening on your property, then they will likely respect your wishes. They will probably feel embarrassed afterwards.

I am sure you are correct. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes. Although, now I’m a bit curious about the other 2 crews who will also be working here. Hum…

I had to ask people working on our yard not to smoke near the house when I was going through chemo and radiation. I asked nicely and they obliged. Maybe it was the bald head…
I’ve even snapped at people smoking outside the hospital on some of my worse days. It drives me nuts!

I agree – I think if you just said something like, “hey, guys, I hate to impose, but I’ve got lung cancer. Do you mind not smoking right here?”, they’d probably swallow their cigarettes in embarassment.
