Oncology on The Big Island

While enjoying the sunset at Huggo’s on the Rocks on the Big Island of Hawaii I met a woman with Ovarian Cancer.

This stranger approached my friend wearing a group of bracelets (one being a livestrong band) and asked the meaning of each of them.  My friend got to the lime green Team Kimmywink band and said, “this one is for her,” while pointing at me.  That was all it took to get us talking.

We talked for a long while about our cancer experiences.  The greatest take away for me was that she is seeing the medical oncologist on the island.  THE?  There is only ONE. Sort of like the Highlander, really?

I feel very fortunate to live in a larger city (Portland, Oregon) where I can get great care and still be surrounded by my friends and family.  Those of you who have to travel for care- way to go!
